The best drafting franchise in the league that has never won anything.
Cale S. has been here since the 1994 founding round and drafts better than eight of the nine men he plays against. Plus 728 above replacement off the board, second only to IronCity, ten hits against three busts. Julio Jones for eleven seasons and plus 298, Alvin Kamara for eight and plus 254, Peyton Manning for eight and plus 254. On draft night this is one of the two best franchises in the league.
It has produced four top-four finishes in nineteen seasons and three lost finals. The arc reads 7, 2, 6, 9, 10, 6, 2, 5, 6, 8, 5, 5, 8, 9, 2, 5, 3, 5, 5. Nine of the last eleven seasons have ended fifth or worse. A franchise with the second-best board in the league has spent most of two decades in the middle of the table, which is the strongest argument on this site that the draft is not the season.
The three finals are 2008, 2013 and 2021, thirteen years apart end to end, and each one came from a mid-table season rather than a good one. The 2021 loss is the one that will not go away: he led going into Sunday night and lost by 7 to a defense his opponent had claimed off the wire that week.
The pattern underneath is that everything he does after August is worth almost nothing. Plus 99 across 1,327 starts by every route other than the draft, against plus 728 off the board. Cale S. assembles better rosters than he manages.
All six positions, in detail. The callout above is the glance.
